Chisinau, 5 November /MOLDPRES/ - The European Union today donated 164 cars to the police stations and patrolling services of 37 territorial police inspectorates.

Attending the event, Interior Minister Dorin Recean said this action would increase the mobility of the rural police, so that to "maximally reduce the intervention time”.

„The police have two important goals: to diminish the reaction time to 15 minutes after a call and bolster the confidence of citizens in the law-enforcement bodies. We hope that, by the today action, we will achieve both objectives,” Recean said.

Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, who also participated in the event, highlighted that this donation was another step towards the modernisation of the Moldovan institutions.

„I want to believe that this investment into the work conditions of policemen will yield positive results and will enhance the confidence of citizens into the state's institutions,” Leanca said.

For his part, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola underlined that the donation „is a concrete measure in the process of transformation of an institution which serves the citizens” and that „people's confidence in police is a key element for a fully functional society”.

The 164 Dacia Duster trademark cars represent a 29-million-lei-worth donation on behalf of  EU.
