European Union extends assistance for Moldova's modernisation

Chisinau, 6 November /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Iurie Leanca met European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Commissioner Johannes Hahn, in Chisinau. The Brussels official is on his first visit abroad made in his new capacity, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

After the meeting, Iurie Leanca and Johannes Hahn signed two documents on expanding the European Union' assistance for Moldova. It is  about a Memorandum of Understanding on the support provided to Moldova for 2014-2017 and a document on funding the enforcement of the provisions of the Free Trade Agreement.

This, according to the Memorandum of Understanding, Moldova will receive assistance worth up to 410 million euros from the EU in the next three years. This assistance will mainly cover the public administration reform, agricultural and rural development, police reform and border management.

The second document, the Agreement on Funding Support Programme on the creation of the Free Trade Area - provides for an assistance of 30 million euros. This programme will help public institutions, citizens and the business community to fully use of the opening of the European market for Moldovan products. Also, the programme will contribute to developing the competitiveness of small enterprises and legislation according to EU quality standards and will promote exports and investment opportunities.

The European Union is one of Moldova's main partners in terms of providing financial assistance and technical expertise for developing and modernising the country.
