Moldovan president, EU commissioner tackle adjusting economy to European standards

Chisinau, 6 November / MOLDPRES / - President Nicolae Timofti met European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Commissioner Johannes Hahn at the state residence today, the presidency's press service has reported.

The president appreciated the fact that the first European official's foreign destination after his appointment to this position was Moldova. President Timofti wished success to Johannes Hahn in his work, noting that during the term of his predecessor, Stefan Fule, Moldova had signed the Association Agreement with the European Union and got visa liberalisation.

"We are set to intensively enforce European reforms in our country in the next five years, to be ready to join the great European family," said President Nicolae Timofti.

Commissioner Johannes Hahn welcomed the efforts undertaken by the Chisinau-based authorities with regard to reforms, that have placed Moldova at the head of the Eastern Partnership states.

The European official noted that Moldova would further receive all the necessary support from the European institutions for projects to modernise the society.

"Moldova will one day be part of the united Europe. Moldova's rapprochement with the European Union takes place step by step. In the next five years, we will take the needed actions to adjust the country's economy to EU standards. The Chisinau-based authorities must simplify the conditions to initiate businesses and create the necessary legal framework for the protection of the foreign business people's investments", said Johannes Hahn.
