Chisinau, 6 November /MOLDPRES/ - "My first visit to Chisinau as European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations is proof that the European Union continues to support Moldova concretely," said Commissioner Johannes Hahn at his meeting with Parliament Speaker Igor Corman today, the parliament's communication and public relations department has reported.
The European official said that the two documents signed at the government today provide for extending financial assistance to modernise Moldova. Thus, Moldova will receive more than 400 million euros from the EU in the next three years. This assistance is meant primarily for implementing reforms in important areas for Moldova, as well as to enhance the competitiveness of small local businesses.
The main topics discussed at the meeting were focused on the domestic political situation, in the context of the parliamentary elections due on 30 November, possible post-election scenarios, future government's priorities.
According to the parliament speaker, the Moldovans appreciate the support of the European Union and understand that Moldova could modernise only with EU support. "The modernisation of Moldova, economic development, creating new jobs, solving the social problems of citizens remain the key priorities for the next government," said Igor Corman, stressing that the justice reform, including reformation of the Prosecutor General's Office and fighting corruption required both a good legislative framework, as well as changing the mentality of the society.
The European Parliament will ratify the Association Agreement with Moldova in Brussels next week. Parliament Speaker Igor Corman will participate in the ratification meeting, which will also be attended by Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, as rapporteur of the European Commission.
