Chisinau, 6 November /MOLDPRES/ -  President Nicolae Timofti at the State Residence today had a meeting with members of a mission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for monitoring the parliamentary polls in Moldova, led by Jean-Claude Mignon, the presidential press service has reported.

The head of state expressed confidence that the ballot, due on 30 November, would represent a proof that Moldova is an authentic democracy, where the citizens can freely express their right to vote.

"The Central  Electoral Commission along with other state institutions watch over the observance of the rights of the electoral contenders, so that the electors vote freely, without restrictions, on the ballot day," Timofti said.

For his part, Jean-Claude Mignon said the members of the PACE mission had ascertained that all the friendly conditions were met in Moldova, so that the elections take place democratically. The European official stressed that the electoral process was carried out in a peaceful atmosphere, without elements of tension.

At the same time, Jean-Claude Mignon showed interest in the way the Chisinau-based authorities would ensure the needed conditions for voting to the Moldovans from abroad, as well as for the citizens residing in the Transnistrian region.  The sides also discussed the way the media works in the electoral campaign.

At the end of the meeting, the head of the PACE monitoring mission, who had held the office of president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe till last January, said that he found out, on the occasion of the today visit too, that Moldova made substantial progress on the road of the society's democratisation.
