Chisinau, 17 November /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova intends to submit the application for accession to the European Union in 2015. President Nicolae Timofti made statements to this effect at a news conference jointly held with Austrian President Heinz Fischer in Chisinau today.
Nicolae Timofti said that “the providing of the statute of candidate to accession will boost the integration policies, will contribute to modernise the Moldovan public institutions and will place Moldova in a space of security”. “Two days ago, the European Parliament gave us a signal of encouragement, by ratifying the Association Agreement. The European friends show us another way of development for our country than the European path. I am confident that, in the years to come and by conjugated efforts, we will get Moldova closer to the European standards and move forward to our final objective – to access EU,” Timofti said. Timofti added that Austria was one of the most important foreign investors in Moldova, country with which Moldova had excellent political and economic ties.
Heinz Fischer said that Austria backed Moldova's European line. “The first step was the signing of the Association Agreement, the second step is to get the statute of candidate state and the third one will be the quality of EU full-fledged member,” Fischer said.
Heinz Fischer pays an official visit to Moldova on 16-17 November, following an invitation by President Nicolae Timofti.
