Chisinau, 21 November /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Iurie Leanca today participated in the opening of two multimedia classrooms at the Ialoveni-based Petre Stefanuca theoretical lyceum and the lyceum in the Varnita village, Anenii Noi district, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.
The prime minister visited the new classrooms and attended a demonstrative lesson in each educational institution. Each of the two rooms was provided with next-generation IT equipment: interactive whiteboard with a projector, about 25 personal tablets for students, a laptop for the teacher, a Wi-Fi router, a high-resolution webcam and speakers.
Iurie Leanca told students and teachers that today's event was the result of a discussion he had with the George Soros sponsorship in New York in September 2013. "He asked me what else he could do for Moldova. I told him, then, that one of our major concerns was education. Today, you see the result of that discussion", said the prime minister.
The prime minister stressed that "accessible and quality education was and will remain a national priority."
The Ialoveni-based Petre Stefanuca lyceum and the lyceum in Varnita are the first two educational institutions in the country to receive multimedia class facilities, provided within the partnership between the Education Ministry and the Soros Foundation.
Education Deputy Minister Igor Grosu urged students and teachers to maximise the opportunities offered by these multimedia rooms. For their part, the headmasters of the two educational institutions thanked for the new equipment, which, according to them, will give students the opportunity to study more dynamically, creatively and efficiently.
According to the funders, the institutions were selected following an open competition launched by the Soros Foundation in July. In total, 29 rooms will be furnished, similar to those launched in Ialoveni and Noi today.
Opening multimedia classrooms is part of a broader initiative to support the education reform in Moldova, financially supported by the Open Society Foundations (OSF) in 2014-2016. Thus, besides the schools’ digitalisation, the project provides for the review and modernisation of the curriculum for general education as well as support for civil society and LPAs in discussing the education reform strategy in Moldova.
