Chisinau, 10 December /MOLDPRES/ - Amnesty International Moldova (AIM) and the Moldovan Post today launched a letter writing marathon titled “Write for Rights” to support people from all over the world whose rights have been violated.
This year, the letter writing marathon is held in Moldova on 1 - 17 December and brings together over 30 groups from different regions of the country, to support four persons - from Saudi Arabia, Greece, China and Uzbekistan - whose rights were infringed.
Amnesty International Moldova Executive Director Cristina Pereteatcu noted that this event took place in Moldova for the fourth year in a row, and the number of people involved significantly increased year after year, especially among pupils. "We further peacefully struggle for human rights, confident in the petition’s impact. We have the firm conviction that a letter, a signature can change lives and make a repressive government more responsible", said the source.
Moldovan Post Deputy Director General Sergiu Batiusca said that it was for the third consecutive year that the company supported the Letter Marathon as managing partner.
"Last year, through our institution, about 5,000 letters were sent, in order to support people whose rights have been violated. We joined the concerned event to ensure the flow of letters and, at the same time, we are happy that we are able to support and promote human rights", said Sergiu Batiusca.
The letters may be signed online at www.amnesty.md/maraton/ or at the Moldovan Post headquarters. The idea of a marathon of letters to support human rights comes from Amnesty members from Poland, who organised the first event of this kind in 2001.
