Moldovan first lady attends UN human rights gala

Chisinau, 11 December /MOLDPRES/ - First Lady Margareta Timofti participated in the tenth issue of the United Nations Human Rights Gala, held at the Palace of the Republic in Chisinau on 10 December, the presidency's press service has reported.

In her speech given before the participants in the gala, Margareta Timofti stressed the importance of observing the rights of citizens in a functioning democracy. "In the process of our country's European integration, actions have been undertaken to ensure women's rights, combat domestic violence, trafficking of humans and organs," said the first lady.

Margareta Timofti praised the activity of specialised UN agencies in Moldova, that contributed to carrying out reforms in justice and education, combating poverty and migration, protection of human rights.

"I believe that it is important for public figures to involve in activities of human rights promotion. Within the SOS Autism organisation, I advocate the cause of children with autism and support the work of the philanthropic Angelus Moldova Foundation, which provides the necessary help to people with incurable diseases. Together with the International Women's Club members, we organise charity events for the benefit of the needy and the disabled," said First Lady Margareta Timofti.

Margareta Timofti congratulated all the winners of the tenth issue of the UN Human Rights Gala in Moldova and thanked the team of the United Nations Representation in Chisinau for contribution to improving the living conditions of Moldovan citizens.
