Moldovan acting premier meets new European Council president in Brussels

Chisinau, 18 December /MOLDPRES/ - Incumbent Prime Minister Iurie Leanca met new President of the European Council Donald Tusk in Brussels today, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

Iurie Leanca congratulated Donald Tusk on his election as president of the European Council, this meeting being the first one after Tusk was sworn in office. The acting prime minister expressed confidence in a further constructive cooperation in the new capacity of the former Polish premier.

The discussion focused on priority issues on Moldova's European agenda and objectives for continuing dialogue between Moldova and the EU. The sides noted that the results of the parliamentary elections from 30 November revealed the stake Moldova had in continuing its European integration process and the prospect of joining the EU family.

Iurie Leanca said that European integration would be the foundation of the future coalition, among the key priorities being: continuing domestic reforms and at the external level – getting the agreement of EU member countries for Moldova's switching to the candidate state category. The acting prime minister said that a special role would be attached to finalising the justice reform, fighting corruption more efficiently, ensuring economic growth and banking system stability, as well as continuing the decentralisation reform. "Monitoring and pressure on behalf of the EU will be as important as the assistance it provides to Moldova in carrying out these reforms," said Iurie Leanca.

Donald Tusk supported this stand, stressing the importance of promptly achieving the reforms undertaken in order to ensure the irreversibility of Moldova's European course. Tusk said he would continue supporting Moldova to achieve its objectives as President of the European Council as well.

The European official expressed willingness to pay a visit to Chisinau in the coming months, before the Eastern Partnership Summit due in Riga in May 2015.

Iurie Leanca will attend the European People's Party Summit in the afternoon.
