Chisinau, 22 December /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan state-owned Energocom company and Petrom Gaz company of Romania signed a contract on Romanian gas import today. The supplies will start in January 2015, via the Iasi – Ungheni gas pipeline. Under the contract, the gas price will be of 1,010 Romanian lei or 227 dollars per 1,000 cubic meters.
"This is a very important event, which brings a completion to the Moldovan energy sector. This is a new beginning for the alternative gas sources for Moldova. The contract enters into force on 1 January 2015. The initial quantities will be small, in order to check and test the system, whereas the order for the next month will be made monthly by signing annexes. In 2015, we will start the construction of the Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline," Acting Economics Minister Andrian Candu said.
The Iasi – Ungheni gas pipeline has a total length of 43.2 kilometres, of which about 32 km on Romania’s territory. The pipeline’s maximal capacity will be of 1.5 billion cubic meters annually, which is more than the annual consumption of Moldova.
The sides are holding talks on the working out of a pre-feasibility study on extending the gas pipeline from Ungheni to Chisinau.
At present, Moldova buys gas only from Russia, at a price of 374 dollars per 1,000 cubic meters.
