Millennium Challenge Account Moldova Council convenes in meeting

Chisinau, 22 December /MOLDPRES/ - The Observers’ Council of the Millennium Challenge Account Moldova (MCA Moldova) convened in a meeting today. The council approved the plan on activities for 2015, in order to implement the Compact Programme, as well as the budget necessary to honour the commitments taken, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

 

Thus, the main activities regard the works on restoring eight irrigation systems, supervising the exploitation of those 127.7 kilometres of national roads, providing assistance to improve the water resources management and access to funds to farmers. In the context, the council passed the 68-million-dollar-worth budget, which is to be valued till 1 September 2015.

 

The body accepted to provide small famers, located in the area of the irrigation systems restored within the Compact programme, with the possibility to purchase the irrigation equipment in leasing, via the 2KR mechanism. Thus, the programme will earmark about 2 million dollars in this respect.

 

Country Director for Moldova, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Leaslie McCuaig congratulated the Moldovan government and MCA Moldova on the successful achieving of goals of the Compact Programme for 2014 and said that it was one of the most successful MCC programmes, which is carried out in over 20 countries. „We want that the U.S. investments be sustainable, bring benefits to Moldovan people and generate new investments in the economy of Moldova,” McCuaig said.

 

The mentioned council, made up of representatives of the government, civil society and business environment, coordinates the implementation of the Compact Programme, financed by the U.S. government and carried out in 2010-2015, provides the restoration of those 93 kilometres of the Sarateni-Soroca highway and more local roads (in whole 127.7 km), as well as support for transition to high performing agriculture, including rehabilitation of 10 irrigation systems.
