Estonia today marks National Day

Chisinau, 24 February /MOLDPRES/ - Estonia today marks its Independence Day, proclaimed on 24 February 1918.
It is a north-eastern European state, situated on the Baltic Sea side, between Russia and Latvia, and also includes more small islands in the Baltic Sea. Estonia’s capital is Tallinn. The country has an area of 45,200 square kilometres and a population of 1.29 million residents. Estonia is one of the less populated European Union member states.
Estonia has the biggest Gross Domestic Product per inhabitant from the former USSR states. It is described as an „economy with big income” by the World Bank and as an „advanced economy” by the International Monetary Fund.
Estonia exports electric and technical devices and equipment, textiles, paper, wood and agricultural products. It imports industrial raw material, transport means, fuels, and mass consumer goods.
The diplomatic ties between Estonia and Moldova were set on 10 November 1992. Estonia is represented in Moldova by the Kiev-based embassy (Ambassador - Sulev Kannike). Victor Guzun is Moldova’s ambassador to Estonia (starting from 4 October 2010). Beginning with October 2006, Estonia has also been represented in Moldova by Honorary Consul Igor Goncearov. On 10 October 2012, a Moldovan Honorary Consulate was inaugurated in Tartu. Tiit Vapper is the honorary consul.
Data by the National Statistics Bureau shows that the turnover of Moldova’s foreign trade with Estonia was of 7.3 million dollars in 2013 (increasing by 9.6 percent compared to 2012). Estonia ranks 49th among Moldova’s trade partners and 36th in the top of countries to which Moldova exports goods with a quota of 0.14 per cent. The import of goods was of 3.96 million dollars in 2013 (increasing by 8.72 per cent). Estonia is on the 54th position in the top of states from which Moldova imports products with a quota of 0.07 per cent.
The number of Moldovan native people with residence in Estonia is estimated at 500 persons. Two Moldovan organisations are registered in Estonia, that work in Tallinn: Luceafarul Cultural Society of Moldovans, headed by Natalia Saar, who is also the leader of the Noroc Moldovan folk ensemble, and the Estonia-Moldova Society, led by Veronica Palandi. The Estonian Community from Moldova (registered in 2005) is accredited at the Interethnic Relations Bureau.
