Chisinau, 2 March /MOLDPRES/- President Nicolae Timofti today participated in events dedicated to the Remembrance Day, to commemorate those who died defending the integrity and sovereignty of Moldova, the presidential institution's press service has reported.
The head of state, accompanied by presidential advisers, laid flowers at the monument to "Maica indurerata" (Grieving Mother).
Timofti gave the following speech before those present at the event:
"Dear friends,
We have mixed feelings on this Remembrance day.
We are sad, thinking of our compatriots who died in the war of Transnistrian.
We regret that even today we do not control the part of our territory, for which we fought in 1990-1992.
At the same time, we know that we fulfilled our duty before the country and out of patriotic feeling, we took up arms and fought in an unequal battle for the land that rightfully belongs to us.
In these conditions, an important thing we can do is to know and convey further to our children the truth about the events of almost a quarter of a century ago.
In the last two decades, some political forces tried to misinterpret the things that happened in those years. At present, we also have citizens, including in the parliament, who share the aggressor’s vision from 1992 and mutilate the real facts which took place along the Dniester.
We must promote the truth about the war of Transnistrian through education, press and correct political decisions. We have to clearly say: we waged a war to defend the country with the remains of an empire.
It was not only an armed confrontation, but also a political one, with a state which repeats a similar scenario in Ukraine nowadays.
The tragic events, that started in 1990 and culminated in 1992 through military operations, with the involvement of the 14th army, currently illegally deployed on the left bank of the Dniester, were not spontaneous.
The aggressor’s goal was to maintain Moldova in a climate of instability, aimed at not allowing the latter to develop in harmony with European states.
Therefore, the firm continuation of the path to the European Union would be the most beautiful homage we should bring to the heroes and civilians who died in the armed confrontations in the early 1990s.
This will be our response to those who tried to impose us another destiny 25 years ago."
