Moldova marks 23 anniversary of accession to United Nations

Chisinau, 2 March /MOLDPRES/- Moldova today marks the 23rd anniversary of its membership to the United Nations.
Being an universal forum of debating global issues, Moldova pays a special importance to UN's role in promoting democracy and human rights, maintaining peace and international security, economic and social development, observing principles of international law and supremacy of law.
According to the Foreign and European Integration Ministry, Moldova's missions accredited under the UNO organisations and offices in New York,Geneva and Vienna, as well as other capitals, where more UN specialised agencies, funds and programmes are headquartered, have an important role in promoting interests and national priorities within the United Nations.
Immediately after Moldova's accession to the UN family, more of these agencies, funds and programmes opened, with the government's consent, offices in the country to back activities of promoting democracy, good governance, prosperity, human rights and strengthening a modern and European rule of law state.
Presently, over 20 specialised agencies, funds and programmes have offices in Chisinau or offices for projects, as follows: UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UN Population Fund (UNFPA), World Health Organisation (WHO), International Labor Organisation (ILO), etc.
The United Nations Organisation was founded after the World War II in 1945, in order to maintain peace and international security, promote welfare and human rights. Currently, the organisation includes 193 member states. The UN main bodies are: General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council and International Court of Justice.
The UN's mandate comprises a string of sectors, such as: development of peacekeeping operations, conflicts prevention and providing humanitarian aid, operation activities for development etc. Also, the organisation provides a global platform of approach and decision making on challenges faced by the international community, such as: sustainable development, climate changes, combating terrorism, disarmament, people's welfare, promotion of democracy and human rights, etc.
Moldova has become a UN member on 2 March 1992. On this day, the war of Transnistrian started to defend the independence and integrity of Moldova.
