Chisinau, 20 March /MOLDPRES/ - The European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) today approved a new draft law on Prosecution of Moldova. Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin, who participates in the 102nd Plenary Session of the Venice Commission, made statements to this effect today.
According to a press release by the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Venice Commission has made a number of recommendations aimed at improving the draft law on Prosecution and clarify certain issues regarding the work of the prosecutor.
Among the main objectives to be achieved through the enforcement of new legislative and institutional regulations on Prosecution, there are: increased independence and accountability of prosecutors, ensuring principles of legality and respect for human rights at all stages of prosecution and the quality of the work of law enforcement bodies involved in the prosecution and penal judicial process. At the same time, the authors proposed, in particular, to clearly set out the Prosecution's powers, prosecutors focusing their work on criminal aspects, decreasing the number of hierarchically-superior prosecutors.
A delegation of the Venice Commission visited Moldova to discuss the draft law on Prosecution in early last February. At that time, experts said the draft met international standards.
