Moldovan parliament to hear report on situation on financial, banking market at close-door meeting

Chisinau, 24 March /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament will examine a report by an inquiry commission on the situation on the financial market at a closed meeting today.

The head of the inquiry commission, Marcel Raducan announced the request. The MP reasoned his position by the fact that the commission’s report contained data classified as state secret. At the same time, Raducan said that competent bodies demanded protection of the information related to the secret of the investigation, "which would allow dragging the investigation and would give the guilty possibility to escape punishment." "Besides, we must take into account that any statement related to the financial and banking system is very sensitive and could lead to disturbing the system and society," said Raducan.

The Socialists and Liberals demanded that the report be heard at an open meeting. The leader of the Party of Communists, Vladimir Voronin, said that the today’s parliament decisions were important, and not the nature of the sitting. As a result, by a majority vote, the parliament ruled that the report be heard behind closed doors. The Socialists walked out of the session hall.

The commission of inquiry into the situation on the financial and currency market of Moldova, the measures taken to stabilise the exchange rate of the Moldovan leu against international currencies and the situation at the Banca de Economii (Savings Bank), Banca Sociala (Social Bank) and Unibank was set up by the parliament in late last February.
