Moldovan newly-elected MPs participate in training programme on parliamentary practice, legislative process

Chisinau, 31 March /MOLDPRES/ - Newly elected MPs participated in a training programme on parliamentary practice and legislative process today, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The lawmakers were informed about the legislative practice and procedures. Former Estonian MP, Environment Minister Mati Raidma presented the good practices and experience of Estonia as to promoting parliamentary democracy.

Constitutional Court President Alexandru Tanase talked about the interaction mechanism between the parliament and Constitutional Court, the present work experience and practices meant to strengthen democracy and human rights.

Parliament Secretary General Ala Popescu unveiled the parliament’s structure and duties and the head of the juridical directorate, Ion Creanga referred to the constitutional framework, parliament’s regulation and legal procedure. Each directorate head within the parliament’s secretariat presented the responsibilities of sub-divisions they headed and assistance provided to MPs. At the same time, expert Catinca Mardarovici talked about the parliament’s role in ensuring gender equality.

United Nations Resident Coordinator, UN Development Programme Resident Representative for Moldova Dafina Gercheva also attended the event. The official stressed the practical usefulness of the seminar to strengthen the institutional capacities of the parliament.

The lawmakers received a copy of the ”Guide of MP in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova” each. The guide provides the newly-elected lawmakers with information about the statute and guarantees to fulfil the MP mandate, parliament’s structure and activity. The issue was worked out by the Parliament’s Secretariat, with the assistance of the UNDP Democracy Programme, and took into account the good European practices in this sector.

There are 46 MPs holding mandates for the first time, which accounts for about 45 per cent of all the 101 lawmakers.  

The abovementioned training was organised by Improving the quality of Moldovan democracy through parliamentary and electoral support UNDP Programme, jointly with the parliament’s secretariat.
