Council of Europe backs Moldovan government in implementing democratic reforms

Chisinau, 3 April /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici met Head of the Council of Europe (CoE) Office in Chisinau José-Luis Herrero today. The officials addressed the cooperation prospects and emphasised the main areas where the Moldovan government needed support of the Council of Europe: justice reform, fighting corruption, ensuring stability and transparency of the banking system, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.
Gaburici thanked José-Luis Herrero for the backing provided by CoE to modernise Moldova. ”The Council of Europe is an important partner for Moldova. We praise the Council’s involvement in implementing reforms and interest shown for developments in Moldova. We are confident that the ties between Moldova and CoE would further be strengthened,” Chiril Gaburici said.
The prime minister reiterated the commitment for Moldova’s European integration and highlighted the achievements got by Moldova so far. ”The pro-European reforms may be continued only with the support of foreign partners, including of the Council of Europe. We reiterate the Moldovan authorities’ willingness and firm will to fully implement all projects included in the action plan on support to democratic reforms in Moldova for 2013-2016,” Gaburici said.
For his part, José-Luis Herrero reconfirmed the intention of the Council of Europe to support the government’s projects and voiced openness for an efficient cooperation on various segments. ”We hope that we will continue cooperation and efficient dialogue we have been having over the past years, in order to be able to achieve the expected finality – Moldova’s integration into EU. Our support will be adapted depending on the government’s needs and priorities,” Herrero said.
The sides also tackled the Transnistrian conflict and results of the 22 March elections held in Gagauzia.
The officials also referred to the next visit of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe co-rapporteurs for Moldova, in order to work out a country report, due on 2-3 July 2015.
Jose Luis Herrero took over the office of head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau in October 2014, having vast international experience in the democratic institutions sector.
