Moldovan PM, top European official attend meeting of Governmental Commission on European Integration

Chisinau, 28 April /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici and European Council President Donald Tusk participated in a meeting of the Governmental Commission on European Integration in enlarged format in Chisinau today. Donald Tusk came to Moldova upon an invitation by the prime minister, made during the latter's first visit to Brussels, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.
The participants in the meeting pointed out the latest evolutions as to the implementation of the Moldova–European Union Association Agreement, tackled the continuation of Moldova’s reform agenda and enhancing joint efforts to adjust Moldova's legislation to the European standards.
The officials also addressed the assessment of concrete steps undertaken by the Moldovan authorities after the first meeting of the Moldova-EU Association Council in Brussels, on 16 April, as well as the progress recorded in the justice reform, fighting corruption, ensuring stability on the financial market. The sides also approached the implementation of the European regional development policies, Transnistrian conflict settlement and political stability in Moldova.
After the meeting, Chiril Gaburici and Donald Tusk held a joint news briefing. „We highly praise the open spirit of the today talks. This is a proof of the importance of our partnership, as well as of the joint commitment to develop it better, deeply and in a diversified way,” Gaburici said.
The prime minister added that Moldova would be able to advance towards achieving the European integration goal only by getting concrete results – modernising Moldova, ensuring observance of fundamental principles of the rule of law state and free market economy. „In this respect, I am glad to ascertain that we enjoy full support of European institutions and of Mr. Tusk, personally, for which I thank him,” Gaburici said.
For his part, Donald Tusk reiterated the willingness of European Union’s institutions, European Council to back Moldova’s European integration efforts and successfully implement the European project to expand in the East.
„Moldova continues to be the most promising partner in the European enlargement. Along with Chiril Gaburici, we assumed a commitment to speed up reforms in Moldova. We are ready to support you,” Tusk said.
Referring to his activity as prime minister, Donald Tusk specified that „Poland covered the same path of integration, with the concerned problems and provocations, so that at present over 90 per cent of Polish citizens say that they are happy with being part of the big European family.”
„I hope very much that time comes when 90 per cent of Moldovans will think the same way. The reforms the government is presently implementing are not for the European partners, but for the Moldovan citizens,” Chiril Gaburici said.
Donald Tusk took over the office of president of the European Council in December 2014.
