Chisinau, 8 May /MOLDPRES/ - The government approved the draft law on prosecution today.
The document sets a new mechanism to appoint the prosecutor general. He/she will be appointed for a single seven-year mandate. The candidate for the concerned office will be selected at a contest, organised by the Superior Council of Prosecutors. The person who gets the highest score will be proposed by the Council to the president to be appointed to the post of prosecutor general. The head of state will be able to reject the proposed candidacy only once.
At the government meeting, Justice Minister Vladimir Grosu said the bill sees that the prosecution system would be made up of the Prosecutor General's Office, specialised prosecutor offices and territorial ones. More exactly, there will be two specialised prosecutor offices, namely: the anti-corruption one and another for special cases.
The draft also stipulates increases in salary for prosecutors. Their wage will be set depending on the judge’s one. For instance, the wage of prosecutors from the Prosecutor General's Office and specialised prosecutor's offices will account for 90 per cent of the salary of the judge of the Supreme Court of Justice.
The parliament is to consider and approve the bill. The law will enter into force on 1 January 2016, except for the provisions referring to the appointment of the prosecutor general by the president, due to enter into force after the Constitution is amended.
