Moldova marks 70th anniversary of end of World War II

Chisinau, 9 May /MOLDPRES/ - More events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of end of the World War II were organised all over Moldova today. The main action took place at the Eternity memorial venue in Chisinau. Attending the event were President Nicolae Timofti, Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici, Metropolitan of Chisinau and all Moldova Vladimir, MPs, ministers, ambassadors, politicians and war veterans.
After the official speeches, the participants laid flowers at the commemorative plates and monuments ”Eternal Flame”, ”Stella of Moldovan Heroes” and ”Grieving Mother”.
Commemoration meetings and laying of flowers were organised all over Moldova. Divine services were officiated in cathedrals and churches. More local authorities organised memorial masses for those who died in the World War II.
Over 1,000 participants in the World War II are living in Moldova. Under a bill approved by the parliament at the end of past April, they will receive 10-thousand-lei single material aids annually on the eve of 9 May. The draft also stipulates that the state monthly allowance received by veterans will increase by 300 lei and will be of 700 lei. At the same time, this social category will be exempted from the payment of utilities and will benefit from 4,000 lei for covering the costs meant for health.
The World War II was a generalized armed conflict in the mid of the 20th century, which affected most of the globe, being considered the biggest and murderous non-interrupted war in the history. The data show that almost 270,000 Moldovans participated in this conflagration, of whom about 69,000 died. About 260,000 Moldovans fought in the Soviet Army and another 7,000 fought in the Romanian Army.
