Moldovan cabinet approves strategy on biological diversity

Chisinau, 13 May /MOLDPRES/ - The government today approved the strategy on biological diversity of Moldova for 2015-2020 and the action plan on its implementation.
The strategy will be enforced in two stages, with its main goal to reduce the present rate of loss of biodiversity. Environment Minister Serghei Palihovici said that 38.6 million lei was necessary to implement the strategy.
Among the actions included in the aforementioned document, there are: creating botanical gardens in Balti and Cahul cities, setting up a training and consultancy centre in bio-security, publication of the third issue of the Red Book of Moldova, establishing the Lower Dniester National Park and Danube-Lower Prut Delta tripartite biosphere reserve (Romania- Moldova-Ukraine).
The authorities are set, in particular, once the strategy implemented, to expand the state protected natural areas up to 8 per cent of Moldova's territory, ensure measures to stop degradation of soil and diminish climate changes, to work out studies on processes threatening biodiversity.
The first national strategy and action plan on preserving biological diversity was approved in 2001.
