Moldovan speaker attends re-opening of Soroca Fortress, inauguration of European village

Chisinau, 17 May /MOLDPRES/ - The Soroca fortress, rebuilt from European funds, was re-opened for visitors on 16 May. The European Village was also opened in Soroca, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
Attending the event were Moldova’s leadership, MPs, ministers, ambassadors, representatives of local authorities, residents of Soroca district.
”We live a nice example today, when we celebrate Europe’s Day in Soroca, when by contribution of people, by their willingness, perseverance and labour, combined with EU support, including the financial one, a beautiful work was achieved – renovation of Soroca Fortress, fortress of Moldovan nation and a jewellery of our historic patrimony,” Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu said in his speech.
Subsequently, Candu, together with President Nicolae Timofti, Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici, Head of EU delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola, made the official tour of the European Village. The officials discussed with ambassador of EU member states attending the event and visited the tents arranged in order to inform people about EU assistance projects. At the same time, visitors had the possibility to participate in public debates with European and local officials, to taste the EU cuisine within gastronomic fairs, to take part in a string of cultural activities.
Andrian Candu, accompanied by his family, visited the exhibitions of flags, guns, work tools and icons and bought more objects of handicraftsmen.
The Soroca Fortress was rebuilt from European funds within the cross-border project titled „Medieval Jewelleries: Fortress of Hotin, Soroca, Suceava”, financed by EU via the Romania – Ukraine – Moldova Joint Operation Programme 2007-2013. The restoration lasted for almost two years.
A medieval festival: “Fortress’ Days – Reanimation of a legend” will be held on 16 and 17 May the programme includes staging of knight fights, exhibitions of medieval objects, fairs of handicraftsmen and a show performed by more Moldovan singers.
