Moldovan speaker attends opening of justice system reform centre

Chisinau, 20 May /MOLDPRES/- The parliament is open to consider the drafts on amending the legislation proposed by judges on modernising the justice system in Moldova. Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu made the statement at the opening of the justice system reform centre, the parliament's communication and public relations department has reported.

The centre, set up following an initiative by a group of judges, represents the first initiative came from judges to support reforms in justice. The initiative group promotes from the inside reforming justice by launching proposals on amending the laws, thus involving the civil society in public debates on the proposals.

The speaker welcomed the initiative to create the centre, mentioning that the parliament was waiting for the proposals on amending the legislation, which would offer more efficiency and transparency to justice, as well as increase integrity of judges.

"Justice risks being the element of society that is almost to disappoint, because there is a low credibility from citizens and foreign investors. Despite daily efforts, the things are not better. The approach in reforming justice must be extraordinary, as we have no time, all reforms had to be made yesterday", he said.

The speaker appreciated a string of ideas proposed by judges, due to be talked to the civil society and academic environment. 

Candu urged the judges to generate legislative proposals meant to make justice more transparently, and the parliament is committed to promote them.

The proposals to amend the legislation are placed on the websites of the Supreme Court of Justice and Supreme Council of Magistrates, and the citizens are urged to express their opinion. The public debates will last for one month.

The centre is supported by the Supreme Court of Justice and Superior Council of Magistrates. Attending the event were the leadership of law institutions, ambassadors, judges, prosecutors, representatives of civil society and academic environment.
