Moldovan government opts for diversifying gas, electricity supply sources

Chisinau, 20 May /MOLDPRES/- The Moldovan and Romanian governments will sign a memorandum of understanding on implementation of projects necessary for interconnection of gas and electricity from Moldova and Romania. A draft decision was approved at a cabinet meeting today, the government's communication and media relations department has reported.

The signing of the document is meant to ensure energy security in Moldova, create prerequisites for integration into the European single market for energy, as well as to consider possible solutions and implement projects necessary for long-term energy supply from Romania to Moldova. Also, the memorandum of understanding will allow consolidating the Moldovan-Romanian partnership relations in energy sector and will contribute to implementing the strategic projects on interconnection with the EU both in the electricity and gas sector.

The projects on energy interconnection between Moldova and Romania (EU) will be implemented in 2015-2018. The amount necessary for their fulfillment is about 750 million euros, of which 421 million euros in Moldova.

The memorandum is part of continuous process of Moldova's accession to the EU.
