Chisinau, 21 May /MOLDPRES/ - Ninety six Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) addressed a letter to the prime ministers of the EU member states on 20 May, in order to back the European prospect of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga.
„The European Union’s engagement towards the Eastern Partnership is more necessary due to the military, political, economic pressure and propaganda of Russia over Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine. The declaration, which is to be signed during the Riga Summit, has to represent a clear position and determined by solidarity and support on EU’s behalf for these three countries and their European agenda,” the letter reads.
MEPs requested a firmer EU reply as to European aspirations of the mentioned states.
„According to the article 49 of the European Union Treaty, we believe that EU should send a positive signal as regards the accession of those three countries to EU. The providing of such a prospect would represent an important impetus for new democratic reforms, as well as the providing of a strong support signal in the present geopolitical context,” the letter reads.
The Eastern Partnership Summit is held in Riga, Latvia, on 21-22 May. President Nicolae Timofti and Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister Natalia Gherman represent Moldova at the event.
