Chisinau, 22 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Nicolae Timofti attends the Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga, Latvia, the presidential press service has reported.
Timofti had official meetings with his Latvian and French counterparts Andris Bērziņš and, respectively François Hollande, who supported Moldova’s European path.
During the summit, Timofti gave a speech, in which spoke out for Moldova’s European cause.
„In Moldova, most citizens see their future only together with the European Union. This, despite an intense anti-European propaganda, domestic political problems and intense pressures from outside. In my tenure of president of Moldova, I declare that my country’s strategic goal is to become a full-fledged member of the European Union,” Nicolae Timofti said.
In the context, Timofti added: „I am confident that the European prospect and then the statute of candidate state would represent the mobilising force to continue the reforms in Moldova. The citizens would trust more the European idea, if Moldova had a clear European prospect.”
At the same time, Timofti underlined the importance to maintain the European path for the Eastern Partnership leaders, Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia, including to ensure regional security.
At the end, Nicolae Timofti made an official invitation to hold the next Eastern Partnership Summit in Chisinau in 2017.
