Chisinau, 28 May /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament ratified the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) at today’s meeting. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the treaty in 2013.
The purpose of the treaty is to regulate international trade with conventional weapons, small arms and light weapons. Under the document, the signatory states commit to establish and maintain effective national systems of control over export, import and transit of eight categories of conventional weapons, ammunition and their components.
The membership in the concerned treaty implies keeping track of weapons export permits for a period of ten years, as well as annual presentation of reports on authorizations of export and import in conventional weapons.
The Arms Trade Treaty was drawn up in New York in 2013. So far, it has been signed by 118 countries and ratified by 32 states.
