Moldovan parliament speaker meets members of NATO's Committee

Chisinau, 2 June /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu today met members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s (NATO) Partnerships and Cooperative Security Committee. The delegation visits Moldova for the first time ever. and is made up of representatives of the missions from the 28 Alliance members, accompanied by representatives of neutral states in Europe, the parliament's communication and public relations department has reported.

The participants in the meeting focused on the political and social situation in the country, implementation of the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU, security issues, developments in the region, prospects for development of cooperation between Moldova and the NATO.

The parliament speaker thanked the European officials for supporting Moldova in the process of modernisation and reiterated the authorities' determination to continue implementing the European agenda.

"For Moldova to maintain its status of a success story, the authorities must continue to implement reforms, especially the justice reform, fighting corruption, resolving the financial crisis, reform of the local public administration, Prosecution, etc. Even if these reforms are painful, they are necessary for the country's development, "said Andrian Candu.

Candu also referred to the policies promoted by the authorities to boost the country's development and face the present challenges, including by attracting foreign investments, implementing projects to ensure energy security and agricultural development.

At the same time, the speaker noted the importance of building concrete platforms of communication with the authorities from Gagauzia and Transnistria, including for the transfer of best practices and expertise in European integration.

The Partnerships and Cooperative Security Committee today had meetings with the Committee for Foreign Policy and European Integration Chairman Igor Corman, Commission for National Security, Defence and Public Order Chairman Veaceslav Untila, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party faction, Vlad Filat, the leader of the Democratic Party faction, Marian Lupu and the leader of the Liberal Party faction, Mihai Ghimpu.
