Chisinau, 5 June /MOLDPRES/ - The official webpage of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) was attacked by hackers. „On 4 June, at 23:30, the information resources of the National Bank of Moldova were the target of a DDoS-type (Distributed Denial of Service) cyber attack, which blocked access to BNM data available on the internet network. As a result, BNM official page was temporarily unavailable. No loss or corruption of data managed BNM was recorded,” BNM press service has reported.
BNM specifies that, along with internet services supplier, the Bank undertook active measures to re-establish the internet connection and users’ access to the official webpage of the National Bank. Presently, all BNM local information services and its official webpage work as normal. BNM, together with competent bodies, will investigate the sources of this cyber attack and will take additional measures in order to prevent similar incidents in the long run.
The DDoS-type cyber attacks reside in triggering of overloading the concerned sites with false information requests. Usually, the targets of such attacks are governmental organisations and big trading companies.
In last February, the information systems of five state institutions were attacked, according to a press release by the Prosecutor General’s Office. Prosecutors did not specify which institutions were the targets of this cyber attack.
Specialists identified six servers, situated abroad, from which computers got infected. The attack was made often via emails, which looked like correspondence ones.
„The information technology and communications offer us a string of advantages, but, at the same time, make us vulnerable to possible virtual dangers. The cyber attacks become more frequent and bring new risks and huge damages to the governmental, private sectors and citizens,” a past mid-April press release by the Information Technology and Communications Ministry says.
