Chisinau, 5 June /MOLDPRES/ - An international conference titled "Environment and climate change: from Vision to Action" was held in Chisinau on the occasion of World Environment Day, marked yearly on 5 June.
The participants in the event addressed more topics meant to draw attention to the need to protect the environment. "Through the activities organised on this day, we want to draw attention to the environmental problems at the local, national, regional and global levels. We must remind humanity how bad things can become, if we do not show care for the natural heritage", said Environment Minister Sergiu Palihovici in the opening of the conference.
"In a world where economic development has occupied a prominent place, sustained efforts are needed to ensure a healthy environment. It is necessary to observe the three dimensions of sustainability - economic, environmental and social development, and, for that, economic development must go hand in hand with the environmental protection. Moldova makes considerable efforts to align with European countries, thus an integrated strategic approach of protecting the global ecosystem becomes essential," said Palihovici.
Attending the event, Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici stressed that environmental policy was part of the general policy of the state. "The government is promoting an environmental policy that cannot be addressed separately from the economic, financial or administrative ones. We will pursue EU initiatives in the field of environment to take over valuable examples of environmental protection and sustainable management," said the prime minister.
The conference took place within five topic-related workshops on climate change, energy efficiency, waste management, protection and conservation of natural resources, environmental education.
World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the UN General Assembly, on the occasion of the Human Ecology conference in Stockholm. The slogan announced by the United Nations Environment Programme this year is: "Seven billion dreams, one planet. Consume with Care". The World Environment Day is marked in over 140 countries.
