Moldovan speaker meets Romanian representative to Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy

Chisinau, 9 June /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu met Romania’s representative to the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy Petru Andea today, the parliament’s communication and media relations department has reported.
The officials broached the mentioned assembly’s goals and functioning, as well as the activity of the national parliamentary delegations.
The sides also exchanged views about the opportunity of Moldova to join the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy and steps which it should take in order to legalise participation in this forum, as observer at the first stage.
Andrian Candu voiced openness to discuss with MPs about the Moldovan parliament’s participation in the assembly.
Attending the meeting also was the deputy head of the parliamentary faction of the Liberal Democratic Party, Valeriu Strelet, who spoke out for officialising cooperation with the mentioned assembly.
The Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy was created upon Greece’s initiative in 1994. At present, parliamentary delegations from over 20 states, among which Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovakia, and Ukraine, take part in the assembly. The parliamentary delegations of Australia, Asia, Africa and the United States of America participate as observers in the forum.
Among the assembly’s goals are: to increase the role of orthodoxy within the European Union and strengthen orthodoxy as spiritual, cultural and political entity, including by supporting human rights and religious freedoms not only for Christians, but also for adepts of other religions, by acting by international organisations and national authorities.
