Chisinau, 15 June /MOLDPRES/ - Chisinau local election results represent a great success for the Liberal Party (PL), considering that the other pro-European ruling parties have achieved very poor results. The leader of the Liberal Party, Mihai Ghimpu, made statements to this effect at a press conference today.
Ghimpu said that, all over Moldova, PL had got by three per cent more votes than in the parliamentary elections from 30 November. "We are happy that the democratic forces have the majority in the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) and in most settlements," said Ghimpu.
The PL candidate for the office of Chisinau mayor, Dorin Chirtoaca ,said that "the new alliance created in the CMC will allow continuing the projects underway and starting new ones."
"A clear-cut situation is outlined for the run-off election, in which we have a chance to continue the European development of Chisinau," said Chirtoaca.
For his part, the leader of the Party of Socialists of Moldova (PSRM), Igor Dodon, at a press conference said that he would contest the votes in the Singera suburb, where, he said, "elections were subject to fraud". By this, Dodon hopes PSRM would get one more mandate in CMC (the 20th) and form a majority coalition with leftist councillors.
According to preliminary data by the Central Electoral Commission, Liberal Dorin Chirtoaca picked up most of the citizens’ votes (37.57 per cent). Socialist Zinaida Greceanii comes on the second position with 35.69 per cent. They will confront in the runoff elections.
