EU countries, Eastern Europe, South Caucasus, Central Asia increase efforts to combat trafficking in human beings

Chisinau, 8 June /MOLDPRES/- Dozens of criminal justice officials responsible for combating and preventing human trafficking (TFU) - representatives of the EU, Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia, gathered in an interregional workshop in Chisinau on 5-7 June 2018, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The purpose of the training was to support participating states in the annihilation of transnational trafficking networks by enhancing capacities in the field and facilitating the exchange of experiences and information, as well as providing assistance in implementing the Protocol on Combating Trafficking in Persons. At the same time, it is also aimed at identifying ways to improve the protection of victims.
Thus, participants from countries such as: Belarus, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan shared best practices on cross-border cooperation in the investigation of trafficking offenses. Experts from EUROJUST, EUROPOL, INTERPOL, SELEC also presented their capabilities to facilitate these investigations. The talks also provided the opportunity to examine the new trends of the phenomenon and, respectively, the challenges in combating trafficking in human beings.
The need to strengthen the efforts of the states of origin, transit and destination of victims of trafficking derives from the increase in the number of victims of labor exploitation, as well as massive migration in recent years.
The workshop was organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in collaboration with the Permanent Secretariat of the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings at the State Chancellery with the financial support of the US State Department.
A set of recommendations have been developed for future commitments on combating the phenomenon of trafficking of the participating states, at interregional, regional and bilateral level, as well as with national and international organizations.
