Chisinau, 23 August /MOLDPRES/ – The law on creation of the first Biosphere Reserve, called Prutul de Jos (The Lower Prut), will be published on 24 August in the Official Journal of Moldova.
The presidential decree promulgating this law will be published in the same issue of the Official Journal.
According to document, the Reservation will have an area of 14771.04 ha and include nine localities in Cahul district.
The Reservation will include an area of 824 ha of forest within Slobozia forestry – State Enterprise for Silviculture Silva – Sud Cahul, Silvocinetic Enterprise Manta – V and Scientific Reserve Prutul de Jos.
The reserve was created to conserve biodiversity, maintain plant genetic diversity, promote organic farming, restore forests, pastures, meadows and conserve water resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and chemical pollutants, capitalise on tourism potential, improve infrastructure and ensure the regional socio – economic development.
The creation of the first biosphere reserve in the Lower Prut meadow is supported by EU throughout the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument. Also, the project implementation aims at reducing biodiversity loss and improving the living standard of population in the area.
According to UNESCO requirements, it follows the formalisation of procedure for establishing the Biosphere Reserve at the level of Moldova for its further integration into the Tripartite Biosphere Reserve Delta Dunarii – Prutul de Jos (the Danube Delta – Prutul de Jos) (Romania – Moldova – Ukraine).
