OBITUARY. Maria Postoico

We have learned with deep grief about the news of passing away of Maria Postoico, an outstanding jurist and lawmaker, personality of reference in Moldova’s political life.
Maria Postoico was born in the Horodiste village, northern Donduseni district, on 4 April 1950. In 1978, she graduated from the Law Faculty of the Moldovan State University.
During 1980-1983, Postoico worked at the Interior Ministry and then acted as head of the legal section at the republican enterprise Moldhoztorg. In 1983, she was appointed state arbitrator, subsequently member of the College of State Arbitration (1989) and member of the Presidium of the Economic Court of Moldova (1997).
At the parliamentary elections from 1998, Maria Postoico was elected MP on the list of the Party of Communists (PCRM) and was also elected lawmaker in 2001 and 2005. In her capacity of MP, she held the position of deputy head of the juridical commission for rules and immunities (1998-2000; 2001-2005), head of the commission for state security and ensuring public order (2000-2001). On the period 2001-2005, Postoico was member of the Venice Commission. In May 2009, she was elected head of the PCRM faction in Moldova’s parliament.
The departed Maria Postoico also held the office of deputy parliament speaker starting from 2005.
Maria Postoico was awarded the Labour Glory Order for long and irreproachable work in the jurisprudence sector, substantial contribution to the implementation of justice, to the promotion of the juridical and law reform, as well as prodigious legislative activity.
We regret the passing away of Maria Postoico, with a feeling of an irretrievable loss for the country’s political life.
We express sincere condolences to the family, friends, disciples, colleagues and all those who valued her.
