General education pupils to benefit from textbooks for free in Moldova

Chisinau, 20 September /MOLDPRES/ - The general education pupils might be supplied with free of charge textbooks by the state. The parliament adopted a draft law to this end in the first reading today.

The initiative belongs to a group of lawmakers of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) and is meant to adjust Moldova’s legislation to international treaties.

Under the current legislation, only the children of the primary education are provided with textbooks for free, while those of the 5-12th forms receive textbooks according to a scheme of hiring approved by the Education Ministry.

Statistics data shows that, in 2015-2016, only 1,674 pupils out of 160,600 included in the gymnasium cycle received textbooks free of charge and another 3,178 pupils benefited from exemption when hiring books.

The MPs are to approve the draft in the final reading, in order to become law.
