Former president celebrates birthday

Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/- Second President of the Republic of Moldova Petru Lucinschi turned 81 today.

He was born in 1940, in Rădulenii Vechi village, Floresti district. He studied at the State University of Moldova, graduating in 1962. He is a member of the Academy of Social Sciences of the Russian Federation (Moscow), PhD in philosophy (1977).

On 4 February 1993, he was elected Moldovan Speaker. From 1 December 1996 to 4 April 2001, he held the position of Moldovan President.

He was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the MSSR (1967-1980), a member of the Supreme Soviet of the SSR Tajikistan (1986-1990), a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1986-1991), from 1990 to 1996 - a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.

He is currently president of the Foundation for Strategic Studies and Development of International Relations Lucinschi.

In 2005 he was awarded the Order of the Republic. He is also a knight of prestigious distinctions awarded abroad - Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor (France, 1998), Order of the Savior (Hellenic Republic, 1999), Grand Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher (Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, Jerusalem, 2000) , Order Star of Romania in the rank of Colan (Romania, 2000).
