Message on Holocaust Remembrance Day

Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/- Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi conveyed a message today dedicated to the Holocaust Remembrance Day, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.

The message says:

"January 27 is a special day - the day we pay homage to the millions of victims of the Holocaust - the terrible crime committed with such cruelty by the Nazis in World War II.

The government is fully committed to keeping the memory of the victims of this abominable massacre alive. We start from the understanding that a mature society must assume the lessons of history, of the dark episodes of the past in order to be able to build a future in which such tragedies will never happen again. Thus, cultivating the memory of the Holocaust as a conscious choice not to forget these horrors is a duty to the victims and an obligation to future generations.

Since 2015, in the context of this day, Week of Remembrance is organized throughout the country, including a lot of events, such as round tables, international conferences, thematic lessons in educational institutions, laying flowers at monuments to Holocaust victims, commemorative exhibitions. However I consider it correct that such events and actions should not be limited to the temporary space of Week of Remembrance, but should become a permanent tradition not only in the curricula of pupils and students. 

Late last year, the Moldovan government adopted the second Action Plan for 2021-2024 on promoting the memory of the Holocaust and tolerance culture to combat racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance. The document represents a natural logical continuation of the first Action Plan implemented in 2017-2019.

The primary purpose of our actions in the coming years will be, in addition to commemorating, informing and raising awareness of the general public, to address the root causes of social phenomena, which ultimately led to the tragedy of the Holocaust: authoritarian and totalitarian regimes, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and hate speech.

In this context, continuing education and training of young generation in the spirit of universal values of fundamental human rights and freedoms, fostering intercultural dialogue are the main tools by which we can preserve the memory of the victims of the tragedy and build open, tolerant and peaceful society, in which each person can grow and prosper regardless of ethnicity, race or religion.
