Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grecianii today participated in a Meeting-requiem dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The event was held at the monument to the victims of fascism and brought together high-ranking state officials, lawmakers, representatives of the diplomatic corps and public associations, the parliament’s communication and public relations general department has reported.
Speaker Zinaida Greceanii gave a speech, in which she stressed that, namely on 27 January 1945, the Soviet Army had released the prisoners of the Auschwitz concentration camp.
”A few people were able to survive in the wake of the ordeal of the Nazi machinery. Almost six million women, men, old people, children were killed. This was one of the most tragic pages in the European history,’’ Zinaida Greceanii said.
According to the parliament speaker, people are not fully aware of the fascist horrors at present either; manifestations of anti-Semitism and hatred are noticed in the society. ‘’These tendencies worry us and shows how fragile the peace can be,’’ Zinaida Greceanii stressed.
Moldova undertakes measures of prevention and combating of the hatred discourse. In last December, the parliament toughened the criminal and civil legislation for counteracting manifestations of religious intolerance.
”We will continue consolidating the normative framework, so that each person from Moldova feels safe, free and is treated with dignity,’’ the parliament speaker said. She noted that it was important that we convey to the young generation the truth about the fascist crimes, so that they never repeat.
On 25-31 January, the Holocaust Remembrance Week is held in Moldova. The parliament’s information territorial offices aligned with the activities of commemorating the Holocaust victims. More actions dedicated especially to young people took place in Edinet.
