Mihai Eminescu National Theatre - 100th anniversary of foundation

Chisinau, 15 March /MOLDPRES/- The Mihai Eminescu National Theatre (TNME) will mark its 100th anniversary of the foundation as national theatre on 6 October. The institution’s creation was influenced by more initiatives coming from personalities of the Romanian culture and of culture institutions.   

Contacted by MOLDPRES, TNME director Petru Hadarca said that the effects of the activity of the Romanian theatre in Chisinau became visible after five years. The success was prompted by the fact that, during two seasons, as of 1924 till 1926, the institution had been led by Ludovic Daus, dramatist, poet and senator. He knew the cultural atmosphere in Chisinau and as manager, he was set not only to consolidate the troupe, but also to create a theatre conceived as an institution which could not be thought out on purposes of financial profit, but exclusively as an institution with public mission. Determined to attract the young spectators, to be attractive both for Romanians and the audience speaking other languages, Daus opted for a universal classical repertoire, including with texts of Russian authors. He gave up the practice of playing in old sceneries and suits, taken from the national theatres of Bucharest and Iasi, and invested in rich scenography, relying on plays ‘’with costumes,’’, i.e. historical ones.      

‘’The audience was coming to plays, as they were raking up common memories and reunited in the hall groups of spectators, heterogeneous from the viewpoint of the ethnic identify, who were sharing non-homogeneous feelings to the Romanian administration, but whom the theatre hall was reuniting into a common artistic emotion, with a Russian text, said on a Romanian stage. The theatre is an art of emotions and intelligence, which is experienced living and has power to awaken the spirit and unite the hearts,’’ Petru Hadarca said.
