Chisinau, 20 May /MOLDPRES/- Moldova must be aware of the role of beekeeping in the country's economy, ensuring the balance in the environment, launching campaigns and actions to protect bees, says a message of the National Association of Beekeepers of the Republic of Moldova (ANARM), released on World Bee Day.
According to ANARM, it is necessary to make farmers responsible, by applying good agricultural practices, to avoid bee poisoning, launch programs to support the planting of honey plants, create optimal conditions for the development of beekeeping business and the multiplication of bee families.
"In the Republic of Moldova are officially registered about 260 thousand bee families, their number being increasing during the last ten years. Currently, the beekeeping sector offers multiple opportunities for starting and developing businesses, including for young people. The evolution of the sector is due to the courage of beekeepers, training and continuous mentoring from the Association, as well as the support provided by development partners - the US Agency for International Development, the European Union and public authorities through the Agency for Interventions and Payments in Agriculture," ANARM head Ion Maxim said.
Currently, there are over 7,800 registered beekeepers in the Republic of Moldova. In 2020, about 3,500 tons of bee honey were produced, of which 3,300 tons were exported. The European Union is the main market for local honey.
World Bee Day is marked every year on 20 May to highlight the importance of bees to humanity and to draw attention to the need to protect them and other pollinators. The chosen date represents the birthday of Anton Jana (May 20, 1734 - September 13, 1773) considered a pioneer and an important expert of modern beekeeping.
