Chisinau, 15 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Embassy of Germany and the World Health Organization (WHO) today donated to Moldova a consignment of personal protection equipment (protection spectacles, medical coats and surgical masks) worth about 713,000 dollars. The humanitarian assistance will help the Moldovan medical system cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as for providing medical assistance to residents.
“The German nation continues providing support to the medical institutions from both banks of Dniester. This consignment of humanitarian assistance is made up of 100,000 protection spectacles, 300,000 protection coveralls and 100,000 surgical masks. This assistance was purchased with funds of Germany’s Federal Government, through WHO. Thus, Germany, being part of Team Europe, comes up with a clear-cut proof of friendship and solidarity for all Moldova’s citizens,’’ Ambassador of Germany to Moldova Angela Ganninger said at the ceremony on the aid’s delivery.
According to the diplomat, this action is an answer to more appeals received from medical institutions of Moldova, which are willing to enhance their capacity in the fight against the pandemic. ‘’We provide assistance, as we are quite concerned about the present situation in the medical sector, as well as of the employees who need these medical products. I call on the Chisinau authorities to fairly distribute this humanitarian assistance, especially where there is bad need,’’ Angela Ganninger noted.
“Today, we deliver a new consignment of humanitarian assistance, meant to save lives. Although the number of cases of infection with COVID-19 is decreasing, nevertheless, the first-line medical employees continue to be exposed to danger. This donation is for their protection,’’ the head of the Office of the World Health Organization in Moldova, Igor Pokanevych, said.
This is the second humanitarian assistance provided by Germany to Moldova this month, after on 10 June, the German government delivered another batch for fighting the pandemic worth 200 million lei. The consignment of assistance contained 100 lung ventilation equipments, 900 pulse oximeters, 11 million masks and respirators, 500,000 gloves, 500,000 protection spectacles and 150,000 protection coveralls.
In the last year, Germany provided Moldova with medical and protection equipment worth over one million euros. Additionally, there is also the five million euros for bilateral projects of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), in order to attenuate the pandemic’s economic consequences.
