Moldovan foreign affairs minister has meeting with French counterpart

Chisinau, 3 September /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu hosted Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France Jean-Yves Le Drian in Chisinau on 2 September.     

According to the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service, this visit, made shortly after the snap parliamentary elections and on the period when Moldova marks the 30th anniversary of its Independence, represents a reconfirmation of the fact that Moldova and France are closer than ever, as well as a firm support by the Paris authorities for the reform priorities of the new Moldovan government. 

The officials set concrete actions for the implementation of the commitments agreed upon between President Maia Sandu and her French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in February 2021, having the strategic goal to develop and deepen including the relation with the European Union.  

In this respect, the two diplomacy heads expressed wish to deepen the Moldovan-French relations and back joint projects able to strengthen the framework of cooperation between the two countries, both at the bilateral level and at the European one, in the perspective of the forthcoming Summit of the Eastern Partnership and taking over by France of the rotating Presidency of the EU Council in January 2022.  

Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu welcomed the recent decision by the French Development Agency to support projects in three priority sectors for Moldova: re-afforestation and irrigation, modernization of the water and sewerage supply system and buildings’ energy efficiency.    

The officials exchanged opinions on the advancement of the bilateral cooperation in the field of investments’ attraction, digitalization and transparentization of the public service, cyber security. The sides highlighted the results of the first contacts established by the competent institutions from Moldova with the ones from France.     

The foreign affairs ministers referred to the political and security situation in the region, with the stability in the EU’s eastern neighbourhood representing an essential pre-condition for Moldova’s development.
