EU provides grants worth 100,000 euros to Local Action Groups from Ungheni, Cahul regions of Moldova

Chisinau, 29 June /MOLDPRES/ - Two Local Action Groups (GALs) from the Ungheni and Cahul regions will benefit from grants worth 100,000 euros in all, provided by the European Union.
The GALs were selected at the second contest launched in last February by the EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Programme, financed by EU and implemented by the United Nations Development Programmme (UNDP) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The Local Action Groups, Răzeșii Pyretusului (The Free Peasants of Pyretus) from the Ungheni region and Lower Prut Meadow from the Cahul region were selected for financing.
„Tangible results have been achieved due to this programme, which turned the Ungheni and Cahul cities into more attractive regions both for the local residents and tourists. Though the contribution provided, the infrastructure of the cities was modernized, the public services were improved, the business environment became more competitive and new jobs were created. We are confident that, through the grants provided today, the potential of the local authorities, enterprises and the one of the civil society will be developed,’’ EU Ambassador to Moldova, Jānis Mažeiks said.
Each GAL will benefit from non-refundable funds of 50,000 euros, coming up also with its own contribution of at least 20 per cent of the grant’s value. The financial assistance will be invested in community development projects and creation of jobs in villages from the Ungheni and Cahul regions. The two GALs include 27 rural settlements, with an overall number of over 46,000 residents.
