Chisinau, 4 July /MOLDPRES/ - Teams of National Army’s sappers have informed more than 1,800 children of schools and leisure camps from the northern, central and southern Moldova about the danger of unexploded ammunitions, which had remained ever since the period of the World War II or since the battles for the defence of Moldova’s territorial integrity and independence.

According to the head of the engineer service, lieutenant-colonel Igor Levitchi, the meetings were held in April-June 2022, within a campaign of raising the residents’ awareness titled, One wrong step can cost you the life!. The activities’ goal was to inform and enhance the degree of risks to which children and adults expose themselves when finding explosive objects in the soil and their inadequate handling.

Thus, mobile teams of sappers of the Moldova, Dacia motorized infantry brigades, Codru Engineers Battalion organized information sessions in schools, gymnasiums, lyceums and leisure camps from the Balti municipality and settlements of the districts of Falesti, Sangerei, Straseni, Ialoveni, Criuleni and Cahul.

The campaign was launched in last April and is held in two stages – in spring and in autumn – when residents start agricultural works and the possibility of detecting explosive objects which remained in the soil grows. Starting from 1992 till present, 24 people have died and another 29 ones have been wounded in the wake of incidents which resulted in the explosion of various ammunitions. Among the victims, there were eight children dead and another six wounded.
