United Kingdom supports Moldova's efforts in fight against corruption

Chisinau, Oct. 4 /MOLDPRES/- The Republic of Moldova has chosen the path of democracy, freedom and development, and the United Kingdom supports the efforts of those fighting against corruption. Minister of State for Europe Leo Docherty made the statement at a joint press conference with Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.
The foreign official said that our country is currently facing several challenges caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has affected the security of the entire region.
"I express my gratitude to the Moldovan authorities and people for managing the refugee crisis. We set out to help the Republic of Moldova face this challenge by providing support to develop the services provided to refugees. We are glad that the Republic of Moldova has chosen the path of democracy, freedom and development. The UK supports the ambition of those working to promote respect for the rule of law and efforts to fight corruption. Today we discussed the expansion of cooperation in the field of trade and investment. Likewise, it is important to collaborate in the energy field, that of defense, as well as in the social sphere," said Leo Docherty.
For his part, Popescu said that today's visit reconfirms the support of the European states for our country in achieving reforms.
"We discussed the situation in the region, the deepening of the Moldovan-British dialogue and the strengthening of security. We are interested in the liberalization of trade in Moldovan agricultural products. We also have good cooperation in the field of telecommunications, as the UK is an important investor in the field of IT. We talked about measures that would improve conditions for our citizens living in the UK. At the same time, there is interest to progress in the field of social protection, the recognition of diplomas, scientific titles, certificates and the conversion of driving licenses. In the same way, we discussed the cooperation between legal institutions to fight corruption and carry out justice reform", said Nicu Popescu.
Leo Docherty is paying a working visit to Chisinau today. This is the official's first visit to the Republic of Moldova.
