Chisinau, 14 November /MOLDPRES/ - By ratifying the Association Agreement and approving a resolution stating that it was not the last stage of the process of rapprochement to the EU, the European Parliament has shown Moldova the path it needs to follow, to have a common, European future. The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), Vlad Filat made statements to this effect during a joint news conference with Vice-Chairwoman of the European People's Party (EPP) Group responsible for Neighbourhood Policy, Euronest and European values, Latvian MEP Sandra Kalniete.
"Everything the opponents of European integration offer only sinks the country into chaos. The termination or renegotiation of the Association Agreement would be the equivalent to the betrayal of our country's European vocation. To progress towards European integration, Moldova can count on its European partners", said Vlad Filat.
Sandra Kalniete said that the elections on 30 November were important for Moldova, but also for the European Union. According to the official, the Moldova's European future will be decided on this day. "I am proud that the European Parliament ratified the Association Agreement and Free Trade Agreement by a large majority. I am not surprised that Communist MEPs voted against. The Association Agreement is a roadmap for Moldova to apply for EU membership. The reforms initiated by the Liberal Democratic government must continue. If Latvia succeeded, Moldova will succeed as well", said Sandra Kalniete.
The MEP also said that the Association Agreement provided many opportunities and benefits, but the Moldovan citizens are the ones who will have to decide.
