Moldova to take part in Earth Hour event

Chisinau, 27 March /MOLDPRES/ - More Moldovan settlements have prepared special programmes that, thereby aligning with the 60+ Earth Hour global action ,scheduled for 28 March. The events in Moldova will be coordinated by the Environment Ministry in concert with the Defence Ministry, local public administration, business representatives.
In Chisinau, the activities marking the Earth Hour will take place on the pedestrian street Alexandru Diordita between 18:00 and 22:00. The schedule comprises more cultural events, including a pavement drawing contest titled "Smile - The Planet Loves You", the 60+ flashmob, concerts given by artistic bands from Moldova, etc. Earth Hour will start at 20:30, and electricity will be disconnected till 21:30.
Earth Hour is marked each year internationally on the last Saturday of March, which is very close to the equinox, and a large part of the world is covered by darkness between 20:30 and 21:30. Earth Hour is an action aimed at raising awareness on issues like global warming, climate change and reducing pollution.
The first Earth Hour was held in Sydney (Australia), on 21 March 2007, and electricity was turned off in over 7,000 cities from 160 countries during the 2014 issue. In Moldova, Earth Hour will take place for the seventh year in a row.
